The Hatton Garden heist is an FM story that will play out in an interesting way over the next few weeks. Two key questions to ask yourself right now:
- How often have you had false alerts on your alarm system - and has this invalidated your police call-out?
- Does your alarm company have the ability to remotely view CCTV in your building when the alarm is triggered?
Someone who knows the alarm and call-out procedure, knows how to disable the lift to abseil down the shaft, knows the layout of the building and the alternative exits - that's a person who knows their FM, right?
If they catch the gang that did this, we bet it turns out that someone connected to this robbery has worked in the building previously.
"It is quite possible - and this is certainly one aspect that the inquiry will be looking at - that there had been so many false alarms previously that the police had decided not to respond to any more alerts. "There is a police policy that if there are three false alarms in a 12-month period they won't respond anymore when intruder alarms go off and it is possible that may well have been what happened here."
